I spent two hours at Truitt's Landing this morning, picked through a lot of
teal, most of which remained in the far pond, but no joy. However, I did
glance a King Rail, that also vocalized a bit. Yesterday, I joined Jeff
Shenot AFTER he had located the teal, but had no luck then. After Jeff
left, a King Rail flushed, and I caught a glimpse. So a slight compensation
for the missed life bird.
On the way home today I dropped by Chesapeake Farms. It took me an hour to
find him, but when I did he showed nicely. And he appears to have all his
tail feathers. Can retrices grow that quickly, or was Les mistaken? I shot
some video, and if it's any good, it will be appearing on YouTube in the
near future.
More gruesome details of a not-real-spectacular Ocean City birding weekend
to follow, if I get the energy and chance.
I would like to add, however, that the dawn launch of Snow Geese was
spectacular both mornings. I estimated about 5,000 yesterday at George
Island Landing Rd, and had caculated 10,000 this morning before a second and
third wave of equal or more magnitude appeared, though I cannot say for
certain they weren't making a wide circle. So perhaps 30,000+. And not a
tiny one among them, that I could see. |
