Greetings Maryland, Virginia and DC Birders –

What has over 15,000 birds, over 184 miles, over 100 volunteers, costs $0 to
count and 1 desperate coordinator? The 13th Annual Chesapeake & Ohio Canal
National Historical Park Midwinter Bird Survey on Saturday, January 22, 2011
(snow day is Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011).

I’m posting this announcement again because we need your help. With of
184.5 miles in the count, we have 18 miles unassigned to counters and I know
there must be some devoted birders out there who will step up for the sake
of science to help us get complete coverage of the count area. Did you know
you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to do it? Yes, count any time
on the 22nd is fine during daylight.

We don’t even ask you to make a contribution for this count as it is free,
free, free! I wish I could give all participants a set of Ginsu knives, but
it just isn’t in our budget. However, if you do count, you can log on and
sign in to the www.dcaudubon.org web site and look at all of the data as
soon as it is turned in.
Better yet, find a friend with a car and have fun with them and cut down on
the miles you need to walk. They don’t even have to be a birding friend –
just one who doesn’t mind walking in a National Park with 5% of the the
National Park System's historic structures.
Please help us fill these count gaps for the longest linear bird count, with
the smallest volunteer coordinating staff and the most heart. Contact me at
if you are taking my pleas to heart and can’t wait to
help us out by volunteering on Saturday or just want to build up good karma
points with the birding higher power.

The unassigned miles are below. We also have other miles with counters not
on Saturday that we’d like to count on Saturday if at all possible. Thank
you for your kind consideration.
