I just came down from an exhilarating climb up our 120' meteorological tower!
Always a good time when winds are in the 20s sustained.
Anyway, our resident Bald Eagle pair seem to be at it again. One bird has been
sitting tight on the nest now for the last couple of weeks so I assume she's
sitting on eggs.
When I finished doing my collection bottle switch, I started a quick scan to see
what was flying in the crazy wind. Several skeins of Canada Geese headed off to
the west to fields near Rt. 2 presumably. A couple of juvenile Bald Eagles
nearby and one distant eagle that has me stumped. It was pretty far off so I
couldn't get a great view of it and with it moving away and the wind pushing me
around my views were inconclusive. It appeared all dark underneath,
including the head, but the tail, when it turned just so, appeared to be rusty.
Sibley doesn't illustrate all of the ages of Bald Eagles and I don't have Clark
and Wheeler here at the office so I'm assuming it's some transitional plumage of
Bald Eagle. I didn't detect any hint of a tail band as in Golden Eagle.
So, onward and out to collect stream water now.
