Just had a 1/2 hour this afternoon to check out activity at the feeder:
N Cardinal 3
House Sp 3
White Cr Sp 7
Chickadee - probably both kinds, several
Tufted Tit - 3
American Goldfinch - 3
Song Sp - 1
DE Junco - 1
Present today, but not during my count period
N Mockingbird
Downey W
Morning Dove - 2
The count period was marked by activity at both ends of the period with a lull of 10 or more minutes in between. During this lull a Tufted T and a female N Card were sitting near to and facing each other. The TT especially seemed to be in a sort of torpor. All the while, however, the TT had a sunflower seed grasped in his feet and eventually seemed to remember it and chowed down on it. Activity started up again with the appearance of a Chickadee.
Present also on the homesite was a Garter snake catching some cloud filtered rays. The first time i encountered him/her i poked at it gently and was surprised to see it have no trouble backing up into its burrow. I guess they can reverse the directionality of the scales with serpentine motion powering it either in forward or reverse - interesting.
