This (Mon, 2/21) morning I found 3 species of grebe along the Potomac
River in DC. I was birding Hains Pt. and stopped by the first restroom
on the river side to look for the Black-capped Chickadee. Before trying
for it, I scanned the river and saw a bird close to the airport side
that looked like a good candidate for a RED-NECKED GREBE. I got the
scope on it, and sure enough, that's what it was. What was most
interesting about it is that the bird saw me and made a bee line in my
direction. I hate to be anthropomorphic, but I think it was curious and
came in to check me out. It still kept a reasonable distance, but
definitely came in fairly close and gave great views. I stopped
watching it for a while, and in the meantime found 2 HORNED GREBES and 1
PIED-BILLED GREBE while scoping the rest of the river. Then I went to
look for the BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, which eventually showed up in the
usual area. It was very cooperative and called numerous times. A
little while later, Rob Hilton & Lisa Shannon arrived, and we relocated
all the grebes and the chickadee. The Red-necked had moved up river and
was much closer to the RR bridge at that point.
I also saw an adult male NORTHERN HARRIER fly over, heading south.
Good birding,
