Hi al -

A quick trip around Hains Point in lte morning (after visiting a museum
exhibit closing this weekend) was not too productive for either water birds
or passerines, as there was strong cold wind blowing from across the
choppy river. No sign, for example, of the Red-necked Grebe or the Tufted
Tit flock and its companion Pine Warbler, and the Black-capped
Chickadee was missing in action today. The only water bird of mild
interest was a lonely Coot in the Washington Channel.

What was not missing in action were raptors; three MERLINS (one
smaller probable male, two larger probable females) perched out on the
golf course, an immature Cooper's Hawk on the maintenance yard fence,
and a Peregrine on the 14th Street Bridge.

The hundreds of Canada Geese on the West Potomac Park playing fields
were just that -- so sign of the Cacklers.

However the greening willows on the Point were a promise of spring!
