I'm always amazed the particular day that I post turns out to be one of
those infrequent slow days. The posts of Potomac sightings provide the
"bang" of the day; mine, the ending "whimper".
I birded Cromwell Valley for about 2 hrs., and my walk thru a soft, snowy
ground cover was notable by the almost complete absence of avian activ-
ity. Without aid of my "ears", I heard only RB WOODPECKER, CARD-
INAL, and CROW. Overhead, a distant prospect for Bald Eagle resolved
itself into a steadily flapping BLACK VULTURE. A TURKEY VUL-
TURE later complemented it.
Try as I might, there were no discernable buteos or falcons, tho' the Kes-
trel is a regular resident. Even the deer, normally quite evident, was rep-
resented by a lone, observant, fat doe, looking on at the antics of a near-
by fox in resplendent red, as it made a series of jumps, to possiby snare
a vole.
I later observed about 12 JUNCO's, a Cardinal and GOLDFINCH at
feeders outside the park headquarters, but they don't count, do they?
