We had a nice late morning walk at Hughes Hollow/McKee-Beshers Wildlife Management Area in Montgomery County this fine Wednesday. The large impoundment on the east side of the levee is very full of water. We had a nice chat with Paul Woodward as he was finishing his walk.

Tree Swallows were flying over the impoundments, and as we neared the treeline heading south on the main levee, we scared up a Wilson’s Snipe that had been sitting at the edge of the water. Back in the fields we encountered a mewing Gray Catbird. Checking in eBird for 2011, we see that Tree Swallows have been reported by several folks since mid-February at Hughes and along the C&O Canal Towpath a little south and east of Hughes Hollow. In eBird, Paul has been reporting a single Catbird from Hughes Hollow fairly regularly since early January, but this is the only location in Montgomery County so far in 2011. Paul and one other person have reported Wilson’s Snipe from Hughes Hollow since early February, and the only other report from Montgomery County is from Andy Martin yesterday near Poolesville.

Also on the impoundments were two pairs of Hooded Mergansers and a bachelor male and three pairs of Canada Goose.

We saw 32 species. The complete list from eBird follows.
