This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, March 8, at
about 11AM.

Top birds this week are NORTHERN GOSHAWK in DC, BLACK-HEADED GULLS in
MD, LITTLE GULL in DE, ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in VA, and YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD in WV.

Other birds of interest include geese, EURASIAN WIGEON, WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER, RED-NECKED GREBE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, OSPREY, GOLDEN
EAGLE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, ICELAND GULL, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, RUSTY
BLACKBIRD, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and COMMON REDPOLL.

An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was photographed in NW DC on 3/1.
BLACK-HEADED GULLS were seen MD, on 3/1 and 3/5 near Port Deposit
(Cecil Co), and on 3/5 at Daniel Crouse Memorial Pk (Caroline Co). A
LITTLE GULL was spotted at Indian River Inlet, DE (Sussex Co) on 3/2.
The ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continued through 3/5 in Chester, VA
(Chesterfield Co). A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was a little outside our
normal reporting area, but was a big surprise in Tucker Co, WV.

Spring migration is getting started, with OSPREYS showing up over the
entire area.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was present all week around Stevens Pk,
Poolesville, MD (Montgomery Co), and a ROSS'S GOOSE put in a brief
appearance near Starr, MD (Queen Anne's Co) on 3/1. A CACKLING GOOSE
was present all week at Wilkins Lk, Shenandoah Univ., Winchester, VA
(Winchester Co), and another was seen in Reisterstown, MD (Baltimore
Co) on 3/6. A EURASIAN WIGEON spent the whole week at Paper Mill
Flats, Baltimore Co MD, and at least one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was on
the Potomac River, at Violette's Lock and Riley's Lock, Montgomery Co
MD through 3/6.

Several RED-NECKED GREBES were seen, on 3/5-6 at Riley's Lock, on 3/1
at Beaverdam Pk, Gloucester Co VA, and on 3/2 on the Potomac River in
SW DC. The AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co MD
haven't been reported recently, but two of them are back, seen 3/5.

A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen over Loch Raven Res., Baltimore Co MD, on 3/1.

AMERICAN WOODCOCKS are still displaying vigorously, with reports from
Kenilworth Pk, SE DC (3/5), and from a number of locations in DE, MD,
and VA. An ICELAND GULL was reported at Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach,
VA, on Mar 4, and on 3/1, a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was spotted west of
Cecilton, Cecil Co, MD.

A flock of about 70 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was present at Huntley Meadows
Pk, Fairfax Co VA on 3/2. By now, the WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in
Henrico Co VA is probably eligible to vote there. Common Redpolls
showed up at widely spaced locations, including five at Hart-Miller
Island, Baltimore Co MD on 3/7, and others at feeders in Bluemont,
Loudon Co VA on 3/1 and Pocomoke City, Worcester Co MD on 3/5.

On March 19, there will be a pelagic trip out of Ocean City, in MD
ONLY waters, on the Morningstar, with Captain Monty Hawkins. Call
410-520-2076.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey,
VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.
