Last night, still sleepless at midnight and so, fortunate to be awake, I heard
swans flying over. The sound went on for so long that 100's must have been
passing through, the swans calling continuously to each other in their
mysterious language. Light from the 1st qtr moon, now at the solstice and so up
especially late, enhanced the mood.
Swans are of course a commonplace sight to birders, on their wintering
grounds, but to hear them overhead from inside one's house is like the
intersection of 2 worlds - ours and theirs. It's worth waking the kids up for,
if you have some; they may remenber it for the rest of their lives.
