I was at Lapidum this morning with at least five other obsevers at
various times. We saw at least two Little Gulls at that time. There were
about 50-75 Bonaparte's Gulls on the Harford side of the river and 100-150
on the Cecil side with many downriver. The Little Gulls worked the central
part of the river. The difficult task for county listers is of course
figuring where the bird is relative to the county line. At Lapidum two
thirds of the width of the river is in Cecil County and only one third in
Harford. This makes it difficult to get the birds in Harford County. Judging
accurately the distance across the river that you see a bird is next to
impossible. Use your best judgment. The river is three quarters of a mile
across here.
We next proceeded to Havre de Grace with no success finding the Iceland
Gull which I believe is a first-winter bird from Mark's photos.
I returned to Lapidum in the afternoon. Four of us again saw at least two
Little Gulls. Then the Black-headed Gull put in an appearance as I saw it
land in the river directly opposite us close to Port Deposit. It stood out
with its full hood extending almost straight up the back of the head and the
red bill visible in the bright sun. It drifted downriver, and drifted and
drifted, and drifted. I could still see it to the right of Mount Ararat Farm
about a mile below Port Deposit when it took flight and came upriver again
but it landed below Port Deposit this time and again drifted back downriver.
I decided to let it go and return home before rush hour.
