A sure sign of spring in Silver Spring!

I found two Yellow-crowned Night Herons this evening just about the time of the vernal equinox (7:21 p.m.) at the nest site used for several of the past years over Sligo Creek 600-700 ' SSE (downstream) of the intersection of Worth Avenue and Sligo Creek Parkway between Colesville Road and Piney Branch Road (~ 100 feet downstream from a footbridge crossing the creek). The approximate GPS coordinates for this site are:

N 39 0' 19.5"
W 77 1' 1.3"

I was away Friday and yesterday - they may have arrived earlier - I last checked for herons on Thursday.
Last year's arrival date was 3/22/10. I found no other herons along Sligo Creek between Colesville Road and Piney Branch Road, but expect more to arrive soon.
