Bob Augustine and I spent 3-1/2 hours checking the waterfowl on the Potomac
at Seneca this afternoon. We had excellent looks at the reported
Red-throated Loon from the bridge and from the river bank about a mile up
river. The bird was always a good distance away, but in the scope we could
clearly see the upward slanting bill, the general outline of the plumage,
some details of the plumage on the back, and the eye. We took some photos
which are fuzzy but recognizable.
Also Seen:
Common Loon, in breeding plumage (calling) from the bridge as we left.
Red-necked Grebe
Horned Grebes; many, 12 in a group at the bridge; 20 or more elsewhere.
Pied-billed Grebe: several
Red-breasted Mergansers: two large groups, maybe 40 -50 in all.
Black-crowned Night-heron; In the creek at the bridge, fishing.
Bonaparte's Gulls: Several
Ring-necked Ducks: several
Also some Phoebes and Yellow--rump warblers.
We did not find any of the Scoters that have been seen there.
