Hi all,
Mike and Joy Bowen and I went to find Mike's state Ross's Goose near Morgantown, Charles County today. We arrived at about 9:15am and found the pond which contained Canada Geese. A man walking a dog came by and we struck up a conversation. In a lovely Scottish brogue he informed that two white birds, one big and one little visit the pond, but they don't come until 9:30 and they probably wouldn't come if we were standing there with scopes. We retreated down the hill to look in the Potomac (3 Horned Grebe, 80 Lesser Scaup, 2 Surf Scoter, 5 female Bufflehead, 1 Osprey, 6 Ring-billed Gull, 20 Herring Gull, 1 Great Black-backed Gull) and then returned to scope the pond and Lo and Behold, the Ross's Goose was there! Nothing beats local knowledge.

We visited some more sites in Charles County. Highlights include:
Cobb Island, Charles Co, MD
8 Horned Grebe
8 Osprey
1 Common Loon
1 Forster's Tern

Rock Point, Charles Co, MD
2 Redhead flying overhead

Swan Point, Charles Co, MD
1 Pied-billed Grebe

Rte 257 North from Swan Point
1 American Kestrel

Smallwood State Park, Charles Co, MD
5 Bald Eagle
2 Mute Swan
3 Wood Duck
2 Osprey
1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Then on to Prince George's County
The entry road to the boardwalk at Piscataway is closed, but we saw some birds on Bryan Point Road:
1 Belted Kingfisher

Wharf Road
2 Bald Eagle
1 Osprey

A nice day except for the wind. A good state bird for Mike!
Helen
