This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, April 5, at 8:00 AM. 

Top birds this week are ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD* and PACIFIC LOON* in VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, loons, grebes, NORTHERN GANNET,
WHITE IBIS, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, BROAD-WINGED HAWK,  PEREGRINE FALCON, SANDHILL
CRANE, COMMON RAVEN, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, warblers, VESPER and LINCOLN'S
SPARROW, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.

A PACIFIC LOON* was seen from the Visitor's Center at Kerr Reservoir,
Mecklenburg Co, VA on Apr 3.

The ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD* in Chester, Chesterfield Co, VA, continued her long
stay through the week.

The ROSS'S GOOSE, in Morgantown, Charles Co, MD, was seen again on Mar 30.
An immature TRUMPETER SWAN* continues at Hestons Farm pond off Shalom Rd,
Augusta Co, VA. On Apr 4 the swan was joined by a ROSS'S GOOSE. Another
TRUMPETER SWAN* was found at Old Trail Golf Course pond in Albemarle Co, VA
on Apr 2. This is the same location as last week's Violet-green Swallow. 

A HARLEQUIN DUCK was still present on Apr 3 at Baltimore's Ft Armistead
Park. Five SURF SCOTERS were on the Potomac River at Riley's Lock,
Montgomery Co, MD on Apr 3.

Loons and grebes continue to move through the area. Among other sightings
were 27 RED-THROATED LOONS at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on Apr 3 and 32
breeding plumage COMMON LOONS at Loch Raven Reservoir, Baltimore Co, MD on
Apr 3. HORNED GREBES were plentiful on the Potomac. RED-NECKED GREBES were
found in Washington Channel, Washington, DC on Apr 1 and 2; on the Potomac
River near Piscataway Creek, Prince Georges Co, MD on Apr 1; on the Potomac
near Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Apr 2 and 3;  on the Potomac near Riley's
Lock on Apr 3; at Knapp's Narrows, Talbot Co, MD on Apr 4, and at Point
Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD on Apr 4. An EARED GREBE was in Washington
Channel on Mar 29 and 31. Another EARED GREBE was seen at the end of Cove
Rd, Wicomico Co, MD on Mar 31. A pair of EARED GREBES were reported from
Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA on Apr 3 and one was seen there on
Apr 4.

NORTHERN GANNETS foraged up the Choptank River, near Cambridge, Dorchester
Co, MD, on Mar 31.

An adult WHITE IBIS roosted at the West Ocean City pond, Worcester Co, MD on
Apr 2.
 
The Hawk Watch at Ft Smallwood, Anne Arundel Co, MD had an immature NORTHERN
GOSHAWK and 6 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS among the 13 raptor species seen there on
Apr 4. A PEREGRINE FALCON flew over downtown Silver Spring, Montgomery Co,
Md on Apr 2 and another is gracing a back yard in Potomac, Montgomery Co,
MD.

Three SANDHILL CRANES were seen along Broadkill Beach Rd., Sussex Co, DE on
Apr 3.

COMMON RAVEN continues to expand from its traditional haunts in the
Appalachians. A pair is nesting at T Howard Duckett Dam near Laurel, Prince
Georges Co, MD.

BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were noted at Leesylvania SP and Occoquan Bay NWR,
both in Prince William Co, VA. Not to be outdone, the warblers are certainly
coming. YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH were found in
several areas including Prince William Co, Fairfax Co, and Albemarle Co in
VA and Prince Georges and Caroline Co in MD. A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was
in Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD on Apr 4.

A VESPER SPARROW was seen at Sandy River Reservoir, Prince Edward Co, VA on
Apr 2. Five VESPER SPARROWS were flushed in Buchanan Co, VA on Apr 2. A
VESPER SPARROW was found at McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC on Apr 4 and
another VESPER was spotted at the Elklick Woodlands, Fairfax Co, VA on Apr
2. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW stopped over in the little artificial wetland at the
Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC on Mar 30.
 
The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL continues to visit a feeder in Glen Allen,
Henrico Co, VA, with a report from Apr 2.
