Subject: Bird walks on 4/16

Dear Editors of Maryland Osprey,

Below is news about bird walks sponsored by Scenic Rivers Land Trust in the
newest Anne Arundel County park. Gates to this section are not usually open
so 4/16 is a great opportunity for the public to visit.

This is the 6th year we have held Walk for the Woods as public interest in
this area continues to grow. Surrounding properties are being added as
buffer to the original 630 acres with protection provided through public and
private preservation efforts.

At the end of this message is a list of birds sighted by one of our walk
leaders Dan Haas and comments by Dave Curson of Audubon Maryland/DC.

Please contact me with any questions or SRLT's Executive Director, Rick
Leader at 410-310-6541.

Thank you for your interest and hope you and other members can sign up at
www.SRLT.org to join us on Saturday, April 16th!

Sincerely,

Jennifer

Land Trust Invites Citizens to "Walk for the Woods" to Enjoy and Preserve
Open Space

Bird enthusiasts can capture an uncommon warbler sighting. Children can walk
to a beaver pond or experience the sights and sounds of spring in the
forest. Adventurers can take on rugged terrain in seemingly endless forest.
No matter your interest, one thing is clear: Scenic Rivers Land Trust's
(SRLT) Walk for the Woods on Saturday, April 16th has something for
everyone.

The sixth annual event takes place in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area, a
630-acre preserve of woods, wetlands, and streams in Crownsville, MD. SRLT
invites local residents to experience this natural area owned by AA County,
which is not normally open to the public yet. The Walk for the Woods will
take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., with participants welcome to arrive
anytime before noon, choosing to hike on their own or join a guided hike.
For directions, registration information, schedule, or to reserve a spot on
one of the guided hikes, please see SRLT's website at
<http://www.srlt.org/> www.SRLT.org or call (443) 597-0063.

The Bacon Ridge Natural Area is garnering attention as the centerpiece of
the South River Greenway initiative, in which over 1,000 acres of forest has
been preserved. It is permanently protected through easements held by Scenic
Rivers Land Trust and the Maryland Environmental Trust.

Scenic Rivers Land Trust (SRLT) is a local non-profit devoted to preserving
open space in Anne Arundel County, and has been a major partner in the South
River Greenway initiative.

SRLT is pleased to offer this hike as a free event, but welcomes and needs
the public's donations in order to conserve and protect land in Anne Arundel
County. All donations will be doubled by a matching challenge from the
Biophilia Foundation. No strollers are permitted. Trails may be muddy;
sturdy shoes are a must. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcomed beginning
at 10 a.m. In the event of heavy rain, the hike will be held on Sunday,
April 17.

Report on Audubon "Bird Blitz" by David Curson of Audubon Maryland/DC 2009:

"We were very impressed by the quality of the habitat for birds and we found
18 Forest-Interior Dwelling Species (FIDS), which is a good number for the
Coastal Plain region of the state. Notably, the understory shrub layer was
in good condition (many Maryland forests suffer from severe overbrowsing by
deer) and this was reflected in the high densities of two declining FIDS,
Kentucky warbler (total =14 birds) and Hooded Warbler (total = 31).
According to the recently completed Maryland-DC Breeding Bird Atlas project
(2002-06), Kentucky Warbler is one of the fastest declining bird species in
the state. We also found some Prothonotary Warblers, which require
bottomland forest and were not known from this area before (because birders
had not explored it much), and also a Summer Tanager, which is at the
northern edge of its range here.

We intend to nominate the entire forest area as an Important Bird Area - it
is certainly worthy of protection and good habitat management as it
represents the best site for breeding forest birds in Anne Arundel County
outside the Patuxent Research Refuge."
