Just got in from a 2hr stroll through the National Zoo and the lower Valley
Trail in Rock Creek Park. I stopped into the Zoo to check the rookery of
Black-Crowned Night Herons at the Bird House. I counted 63 in the immediate
vicinty--there were undoubtedly more hidden and dispersed. Also had a
flyover Wood Duck, several Turkey Vultures, White-Throated Sparrows and gobs
of Cardinals (both singing their hearts out) and other expected urban birds
(Starlings, House Sparrows, Grackles, etc.).

In the Park proper I enjoyed a nice show by two Palm Warblers (in gorgeous
breeding plumage) as they hopped around, foraging among the leaves on the
forest floor. Also had many Flickers, Red-Bellies, a Pileated, and a Downy,
in the woodpecker department, as well as an actively calling Eastern Phoebe,
Goldinches, several White-Breasted Nuthatches, and innumerable Robins.
