I went to the part along Pipe Creek in the back where a trail that was once
Sawmill Road follows the stream. I heard that familiar old pretty song that
belongs to a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH. I tried for at least 10 minutes to
locate the bird down below me along the creek and in spite of the lack of
leaf cover I could not spot the singer. These birds like odd spots and this
one apparently picked a real odd one. I have had them sing from rocks in the
middle of my trout streams and from the tops of big trees. And a lot of
spots that weren't obvious. Like this one.

While I was searching I heard 1 and only 1 song from a WINTER WREN. It
wasn't real close by, but it still caught my interest. No, I didn't see it
either.

However I did have a BELTED KINGFISHER do a flyby. Her name was Beki. She
had to spell it for me because I always tend to spell it Becky. Wonder where
she got a name like that.

The WHITE-THROATS were singing their fool heads off. Sounds like Canada
around here again. And this AM I had a very nicely colored one in the yard
here.

And yesterday we headed north out of the country to Gettysburg. I still say
this is the most reliable place for REDHEADED WOODPECKERS. For any new
birders that want a real good look, we had one land on a rock practically
right in front of us. To our left was the monument marking Pickett's charge.
This is right along Confederate Ave. And Pickett is still mad at Lee for
sending his men out there. Longstreet didn't care much for it either. The
Woodpeckers voiced no opinion. At least 2 pair were seen at holes in the
woods around there.

Over near the Pennsylvania monument we had a singing EASTERN MEADOWLARK
perched on one of the smaller monuments. That's on the Yankee side near the
Angle, where Pickett's charge was headed. Never quite got there.
