Dan,

Least summer on a trip to the Pacific NW, we ran across a mound similar to these and they were Thatching Ants. You might want to search on line fit then to see if they are the same.

Since my move to St. Margaret's last month, I have been thoroughly
entertained every evening by the breeding pair of Eastern Screech Owls
in my back yard. I'm sure others have similar experiences, but I'll
share tonight's vocalizations with all. The male does his thing
starting in around dusk and tonight (and a few nights ago), I've heard
the female's squeals. I believe I know where the nest is and that
might be her way of saying go away. I put up a box in the back part
of the yard, but they've not taken to it. She has likely nested in a
hole an oak tree just off my patio.

In other news, I've recently photographed a mound of ants. If anyone
has any insight as to the make and model, I'd welcome an ID.

Every day seems to bring a new yard bird: this morning an Eastern
Towhee and Field Sparrow dropped by for a visit. Tomorrow? Who
knows???
