Headed out to southern Frederick County in the rain this evening hoping for
some downed migrants, had a really successful whistle-stop tour.
On the Potomac east of Brunswick (just east of campground):

1 RED-NECKED GREBE, near breeding plumage, have photos, may as well be of the
Loch Ness Monster though...
1 COMMON GOLDENEYE, female, county bird for me (photos)
7 Common Merganser
12 Double-crested Cormorants
1 MERLIN, zipped over, chasing a starling!
1 Bald Eagle, imm., took an unsuccessful swipe at the goldeneye
2 FORSTER'S TERNs, an adult and a 1st-year, another county bird for me
(photos), there for at least 30 mins, actively fishing and calling
7 Ring-billed Gulls

Potomac at Weverton (Frederick Co):
1 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER - female, alone in midwater, diving constantly.
Another county bird, yes, I'm a low-lister.
5 Common Mergansers
4 Hooded Mergansers

2 American Black Ducks
18 Double-crested Cormorants
4 Louisiana Waterthrushes (several others heard elsewhere)
Pine Warbler
Swamp Sparrow
many 100s of swallows - mainly tree but good numbers of barn, a few NRWS

Keep Tryst Rd, Weverton (just in Washington County, I think):
AMERICAN BITTERN - at a tiny roadside pond, caught my eye as I drove past - not
very cryptic of it (photos)

Lilypons(quick check):
4 Blue-winged Teal
3 Wilson's Snipe
1 Winter Wren
100s of blackbird come in to roost
lots of Swamp Sparrows

Cheers

Andy Wilson,
Frederick
