I finally had a chance to look for the 2 BLACK SCOTERS this evening,
after dinner. I got to West Potomac Park at 7:35pm and stopped near the
north end since Steve Hersey last reported the birds close to Memorial
Bridge. No sign of the birds there, but scanning to the south I could
see 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 2 MALLARDS, and 2 other dark ducks.
Fingers crossed, I drove down the south end of the park and scanned
again. Bingo! The birds were in the middle of the Potomac, just north
of the 14th St. Bridge.

After that I did a very quick spin around Hains Pt. (it was getting
pretty dark at this point) and found a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL on a
small pond on the golf course (on the "long pond" about 60% of the way
down the Channel side of the course).

A subadult BALD EAGLE and 2 CHIMNEY SWIFTS were the only other birds of
note this evening

At lunch today I walked down to the Anacostia River and saw 6 RUDDY
DUCKS and 1 COOT. This was opposite the US DOT bldg, just downstream of
the Navy Yard.

Good birding,
