HI all,

Barry and I went over to Hughes Hollow this evening -- we had planned to
stop off at Seneca but Riley's Lock Road was under water (which was
flowing rather swiftly) so thought better of it!

Anyway, as Paul Woodward posted earlier today, the impoundments at
Hughes Hollow are more full than usual but otherwise everything is in
good shape. We had a SORA at about 7:30 PM along the right side of the
main dike, beyond the cross dike -- foraging only a few feet from the bank.
Very tame and confiding.

We heard a BITTERN calling from the reeds in the first impoundment,
fairly near the parking lot, but it didn't show. Then at about 7:45,
another
bird flew in from the back impoundment, giving good views, and then dove
into the reeds never to be seen again!

Otherwise not too much around. Ducks in the left (open water)
impoundment included 3-4 female and 1 male HOODED MERGANSER, 1
female BUFFLEHEAD, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS as well as some
Mallards and Wood Ducks, a single Pied-billed Grebe and 4-5 Coots. (No
Red-breasted Mergansers.)
