Despite high water and high winds, had fun and found some nice birds.
Kent: Had a late CACKLING GOOSE along Langford Road in Chestertown
today. Latest previous EBird record of Cackling in Maryland was the end
of March--there are no April records at all of Cackling in Maryland
other than this. (I have photos if anyone is interested.) Checked
Eastern Neck NWR at the end of the day and had 7 LEAST TERNS, the
earliest county eBird record. The usual goodies at Chestertown WWTP: 3
CASPIAN TERNS, 10 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 30 or so NORTHERN SHOVELERS and a
few GREEN-WINGED TEAL. At Millington WMA PURPLE MARTINS & LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH.
Caroline: The previously reported LEAST TERNS were at Choptank (thanks
Bill H. for posting about these); had two WILSON'S SNIPE at Tanyard and
may have heard a KING RAIL, but it only called once. The usual early
warblers at Idylwild WMA but not much else. PURPLE MARTINS at Denton WWTP
Full lists will be posted to eBird.
There were rain pools in almost every field but none of the hundred or
so I checked had shorebirds except for one at Eastern Neck with both
Yellowlegs. Eastern Neck NWR was closed for "high water". But people
were driving around the sign and I followed suit. There was no water on
the roads when I was there though debris covered the roads, but it was
passable.
Good birding!
