I led an enthusiastic group of supporters of The Nature Conservancy
on a 3-hour walk at Pennyfield Lock on the C&O Canal this morning,
Tuesday April 19.

Despite the overcast and occasionally showery conditions, birds were
moderately active. Our nicest finds were a small group of PURPLE
FINCHes, a stunning male PRAIRIE WARBLER (most unusual for this
location), and several singing YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERs, two of which
appeared to be in a territorial fight. NORTHERN PARULAs were very
much in evidence and we had a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER in the scope
for several minutes.

Another enjoyable highlight was watching a pair of BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERs building a nest.
