Top bird this week is ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD (still) in VA.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, COMMON
LOON, EARED GREBE, NORTHERN GANNETT, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, bitterns,
ibis, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, PEREGRINE FALCON, BLACK-NECKED STILT,
AMERICAN AVOCET, UPLAND SANDPIPER, RED PHALAROPE, gulls, terns,
CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW, WHIP-POOR-WILL, migrants, SUMMER TANAGER, sparrows,
PURPLE FINCH and RED CROSSBILL.

The ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continues in Chester, Chesterfield Co VA last seen
on April 15.

A drake CINNAMON TEAL (provenance unknown) was located at Back Bay NWR,
Virginia Beach, VA on April 15. Six drake SURF SCOTERS were seen in the
Potomac River from Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on April 13. A pair of
BLACK SCOTERS was on the Potomac River in DC between the Memorial and 14th
Street Bridges on April 13.

A RING-NECKED PHEASANT was heard at Southwest Area Park, Baltimore, MD on
April 14.

A flyover group of 273 COMMON LOONS was a very impressive sighting at
Southwest Area Park, Baltimore, MD on April 14. 

An EARED GREBE was re-found at the end of Cove Road in Wicomico Co, MD on
April 13. Another EARED GREBE was seen at North Beach, Calvert Co, MD on
April 14.

NORTHERN GANNETS have been observed from several locations including:
Elliott Island Road, Dorchester Co, MD and Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on
April 12; Hundreds of NORTHERN GANNETS were pushed up against the Bay
Bridge, sighted from Sandy Point, Anne Arundel Co, MD on April 16. 

A pair of YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continues to build nests on Sligo
Creek Parkway, Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD observed on April 13.

Both AMERICAN and LEAST BITTERNS were seen at Swan Harbor Farm Park, Harford
Co, MD during the week.

GLOSSY IBIS were reported in several sites including Back River, Baltimore
Co, MD, Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co, MD, Schoolhouse Pond,
Prince George's Co, MD, Swan Harbor Farm, North Beach, Truitt's Landing,
Worcester Co, MD. Two WHITE-FACED IBIS were observed at Chincoteague NWR,
Accomack Co, VA on April 18. 
 
355 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were recorded at the Cromwell Valley Hawk Watch,
Baltimore Co, MD on April 14. A GOLDEN EAGLE flew over a yard in Croom,
Prince George's Co MD on April 15.
 
A PEREGRINE FALCON, previously seen in Silver Spring was spotted on the
Hilton Hotel on April 13.

One BLACK-NECKED STILT and one AMERICAN AVOCET were recorded at Poplar
Island on April 13. Ten BLACK-NECKED STILTS were at Truitt's Landing on
April 16. Twelve AMERICAN AVOCETS passed Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD
headed downstream, then upstream, on April 16.

An UPLAND SANDPIPER was discovered hiding in vegetation at the Woodward Turf
Farm, Fauquier Co, VA on April 18. A breeding-plumaged RED PHALAROPE was
seen at Back Bay NWR on April 17.

A BLACK-HEADED GULL was observed at Back River, Baltimore Co, MD on April
19. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Chincoteague NWR on April 13.

CASPIAN TERNS have put in appearances in the region. A high count of
12 was seen at Martinak SP, Caroline Co, MD on April 14. Two COMMON TERNS
were flying up the Bay at North Beach on April 16.

A CHUCK-WILLS WIDOW returned to a yard in Franklin Co, VA on April 14.
An unusually urban WHIP-POOR-WILL was calling from a yard in Silver Spring
on April 12,

The spring migration was gathering steam this past week with sightings of
hummingbirds, EASTERN PHOEBE, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, swallows, nuthatches,
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATHER, warblers, BLUE GROSBEAK and orioles.
The warbler hot spots included: Rock Creek Park, DC; Monticello Park,
Alexandria, VA; Susquehanna SP, Harford Co, MD; Great Dismal Swamp NWR,
Suffolk, VA and Patapsco Valley SP, Howard Co, MD. A CERULEAN WARBLER was
seen at Switzer Dam, Rockingham Co, VA on April 17. Oriole sightings
included: an ORCHARD ORIOLE in Bristol, Anne Arundel Co, MD on April 13 and
an ORCHARD ORIOLE at Riley's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD on April 17
 
A SUMMER TANAGER was seen in southeast Greensville Co, VA on April 12.

An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on April 14.
VESPER SPARROWS were at Southwest Area Park on April 13, 14 and 17. Another
VESPER SPARROW was seen at the Crownsville Containment Pond, Anne Arundel
Co, MD on April 13. A VESPER SPARROW was at Swan Harbor Farm Park on April
16. A VESPER SPARROW was at Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, Prince George's Co,
MD on April 17. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was noted at Southwest Area Park on
April 14. LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were observed at Lake Accotink Lake Park and
Huntley Meadows Park, both in Fairfax Co, VA on April 14.

PURPLE FINCHES showed up at feeders throughout the region during the past
week. Nine RED CROSSBILLS came to a feeder at Union Springs, Rockingham Co,
VA on April 15.

West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
