I guess I'm the third person to have independently found the MARSH WREN
this morning at Hughes Hollow (I was there around 9 AM, so that makes
Jared the official discoverer). ;-) Also of note was a singing RUSTY
BLACKBIRD (doing its soft gurgling song) and a surprising variety of
ducks given the time of year: in addition to the breeding Wood Ducks and
Hooded Mergansers, there was also a latish pair of GADWALL, a
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, three BUFFLEHEAD, and a RING-NECKED DUCK.
While unsuccessfully trying for the one day wonder Cattle Egrets on
Sugarland road, I had a FOY male BOBOLINK. This is only the second
eBird record of the year for Maryland, and the earliest ever eBird
record for Montgomery County by seven days. I also had the WILSON'S
SNIPE previously reported by Jim Green at the Cattle Egret pond, and a
small flock of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWs.
In Howard County at the Hipsley Mill Road access to Patuxent River Park,
I had seven species of warbler, including a WORM-EATING WARBLER, PRAIRIE
WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULAs, LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER. I also had
a late FOX SPARROW. This is the latest eBird record ever for Howard
County. (Trail was flooded and muddy, so I recommend wellies if you go
here).
Good birding!
