Hello Maryland Birders,

I'm all new to the world of Maryland birding, in fact today was my
first day birding in Maryland because my dad needed to make a business
trip to Hagerstown and I went along to do birding. And what an
exciting first day of Maryland birding it was!

We had about an hour in the afternoon. We chose the C&O Canal--Cushwa
Basin in Williamsport to be the birding destination. In the woods
right in front of where you park (if you park in the direction facing
away from the Potomac river) there were some good birds. Among the
most regulars (A. Robins, N. Cardinals, House Sparrows, and all the
other super common birds) were the following notables:

Black-And-White Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Red-eyed Vireo

In the woods right behind the information (across the parking lot)
were the following notables:

Yellow-rumped Warblers
Black-throated Green Warbler

Along the water's edge near the junction of the small river and the
Potomac, there was a Rusty Blackbird pair. Also a Muskrat. Across
the old bridge (that you can walk across to a walking path through the
woods) was a Spotted Sandpiper. An Osprey and Cooper's Hawk both flew
over. In the woods on the other side of the old bridge was a Common
Yellowthroat, Ovenbird pair, and the most beautiful male Baltimore
Oriole.

Good birding,

Gabriel Mapel
New Hope, Virginia

Ps. I am doing a "Junior Big Year" birding this year in 2011. If
you'd like to view my progress and learn what a "Junior Big Year" is,
