Hi Everyone,

Here's a message from Brad Lanning from Washington Co., home of the Solitary Sandpiper.

"Good morning Bill and All,

I am so very happy to report a new personal high count for one location in the county. On the way home from work yesterday, I swung by Horseshoe Ln. flooded fields and driveway. I parked my car by the gate and slowly began to walk as I noticed that something magical was taking place:)) I was astonished to see Solitary Sandpipers everywhere I looked. I have never witnessed such a fall-out of shorebirds in Washington County, for one location, of this magnitude before. I am so excited for the rare opportunity!! After a careful count, I came up with 34 Solitary Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, and 2 Least Sandpipers. I did not see the 2 Greater Yellowlegs from a few days ago. A pair of Wood Ducks were present as well. The most amazing part took place just as I was about to leave. The Solitary Sandpipers became extremely vocal. Imagine a ton of SOSP all talking loudly in sandpiper language. It was music to my ears. They must have been
communicating about migration because just then, 2 groups departed. First, 4 birds left together and flew high to the North, and then, another group of 8-9 birds took off and climbed out. They were calling loudly as they migrated, a totally amazing experience!

B-RAD, over and out, from Washington County:)) "

Thanks, Brad. An enjoyable description of this cool migration event.

Good birding,

Bill
