First off, thanks a lot to everyone who responded to my questions about AA Co. canoeing and birding. My friend and I got super ambitious and, with the tide with us both ways we decided to amkea full day of it. We put in on the Patuxent River at the Rte 4 bridge and paddled south all the way through Jug Bay, past Selby's landing, up Mataponi Creek and landed at Merkle WMA. It took about 3 hours. We saw at least 20 pairs of Osprey along here, several Bald Eagles, Purple Martins and lots of Tree, Barn, and N. Rough-winged Swallows, a 6-8 pairs of Wood Ducks, a pair of Blue-winged Teal, several Greater Yellowlegs, a Solitary Sandpiper, a couple Spotted Sandpipers, a couple of Coots, Forster's Terns, and several Marsh Wrens calling from both sides of the river. We saw an otter. At Merkle we walked around the woods and over to the observation tower where we had American Redstart, Yellow-throated Warbler, Yellow, and Hooded Warbler.

On the way back, the wind picked up and it was a bit of a struggle paddling across Jug Bay so we stopped at the Wetland Sanc. to rest and hiked the Rail Road trail over to the visitors center and back we added Orchard Oriole (singing male), Scarlet Tanager (molting first yr male), and Eastern Kingbirds (pair). The rest of the paddle back to Rte 4 was very nice as well and we saw 2 Beavers. Just an awesome day to be on the water. 65 species of birds including 10 warbler spp.

Good Birding,
