This story reminds me how I had a female Northern Parula feeding on the ground at the Azalea section of the National Arboretum this weekend!  At first it was bouncing around in an azalea bush and as it came lower I found myself rooting for it to actually set foot on the ground. Eventually it actually did!

The last time I saw something like that on a really cold early May day in Chicago, where the temps forced a number of Warbler species - including a Blackburnian Warbler to forage on a lawn of all places...

The complexity of animal behavior never fails to impress!

I just wanted to put this to rest and remove all doubt. This was yet another birding learning experience. I received seven very nice responses to my post and six of them were in agreement. I learned six different nice ways to say "It's a Scarlet Tanager, pinhead."

Thanks again to all who responded. I'll never forget to scour the ground in front of me for Scarlet Tanagers from this day forward...forget those treetops...they just make my neck hurt anyway.
