Hi all,

I got to riley's lock at about 4:25 and got on the least tern by about 4:30. It was floating down river on a log but took off once it got to the rapids. It flew toward the virginia side and then headed upriver a short ways and circled back. It dove several times and eventually it looked like it had a successful catch. Not sure as to why no one else was around, I texted andy martin and found out that the group was at violettes. I don't know how I got mixed up, but glad it worked out! I then went over to Hughes Hollow with a main interest in locating the least bittern that has been heard sporadically in recent weeks. I spent around 1.5 hours or so with no luck, but the continuing purple gallinule got up out of the cattails and flew from the parking area toward the western most clump of cattails. I also flushed a sora from the edge of the same impoundment. At 7:00pm I got a call from Jim Moore who mentioned that a neotropic cormorant had also been seen. I missed the note on that one, so zoomed back over to rileys. At this point there was no sign of the tern or cormorant, but as Jim mentioned the nighthawks were out in force! At 8pm, with the scope, I counted 98 distant nighthawks above the treeline past violette's. I decided to try hughes hollow once more at dusk. Daniel Romney came along and though we didnt see/hear the bittern, a flyover yellow-crowned night heron was a nice treat.
