I recently watched a program on Animal Planet highlighting efforts in
Britain to make farms wildlife friendly. The government provides financial
incentives to farmers who implement practices that have a positive effect on
wildlife. One such practice was not to mow small patches of farm fields in
order to provide habitat for grassland birds to nest, in this case Eurasian
Skylarks.

The other factor to consider this year is the wet and sometimes cool
weather we have had recently. I suspect that many of the ground nests have
already failed because of flooding or nestlings that died from exposure so I
would say for this year mowing now may be less destructive than in June.
