This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 24, at noon and an error
with the SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER listing corrected at
8:45 pm.

Top birds this week are: NEOTROPIC CORMORANT* in MD, LITTLE EGRET in DE,
PURPLE GALLINULE* in MD, LONG-BILLED CURLEW* in MD, and SCISSOR-TAILED
FLYCATCHER in VA.

Other birds of interest include NORTHERN BOBWHITE, LEAST BITTERN,
MISSISSIPPI KITE, COMMON MOORHEN, shorebirds, terns, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO,
CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW, flycatchers, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, PHILADELPHIA VIREO,
thrushes, warblers, sparrows, SUMMER TANAGER, DICKCISSEL, and RED CROSSBILL.

A NEOTROPIC CORMORANT* was reported flying down the Potomac River, MD in the
vicinity of Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co, MD, on May 18. It was not
relocated.

A LITTLE EGRET was reported May 22 along Fowler Beach Road, Sussex Co, DE,
just before the bridge at the water control structure. It was mixed in with
Snowy and Great Egrets.

The PURPLE GALLINULE* was seen again at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on
May 18 and 21.

A LONG-BILLED CURLEW* was found May 23 at Swan Creek in northern Anne
Arundel Co, MD. Swan Creek, the property of the MD Port Administration, is a
dredge containment facility. The following information comes from a birder
who frequents the property: To get to the facility from Baltimore take the
last exit off the I-695 beltway prior to the Key Bridge, onto Hawkins Point
Rd, turn left on Fort Smallwood Rd., and immediately after the stop light at
Pitman Rd, turn left onto Kembo Rd.  Drive to the end of this road, through
two gates, and park at the end of the fence to the right, just prior to the
flagpole.  Go to the first trailer on the left, and write your name in the
log book just inside the door. Birders may set up their scopes in the
vicinity of the flagpole, but are asked to stay off the roadway. 

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER* was found May 23 at the back of a field at the
corner of Red House Rd and Nowlin's Mill Rd, Rustburg, Campbell Co, VA. To
search for this bird get on Rte 615 and go 9.8 miles to the intersection of
Nowlin's Mill Rd and Red House Rd. The field is to the right at the
intersection.

A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was heard May 21 at Salt Log Gap, Amherst Co, VA.
A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was seen walking along Ebenezer Church Rd near Bluemont
in western Loudoun Co, VA on May 23. Several NORTHERN BOBWHITE were heard
May 22 during a nightjar survey in Southampton Co, VA.

A LEAST BITTERN continued to be seen at Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD with a
sighting on May 20. Two LEAST BITTERNS and a KING RAIL were found May 18 on
Hog Island, Surry Co, VA. 

MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen at a number of locations this past week
including one on May 18 flying above the Burke Center Shopping Center,
Burke, Fairfax Co, VA; two were reported from Point Lookout SP, St Mary's
Co, MD on May 20; a subadult was seen May 21 at the Kenilworth Aquatic
Gardens, NE DC; one was at Perryman Park May 21, Harford Co, MD; and on May
23, three adult MISSISSIPPI KITES flew over the Fort Smallwood SP Hawk
Watch, Anne Arundel Co, MD.

A COMMON MOORHEN was feeding on the edge of a pond off Langford Rd in Kent
Co, MD on May 18. A COMMON MOORHEN was found May 20 at Hughes Hollow,
Montgomery Co, MD. 

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found May 20 with numerous other shorebirds
along Sassafras Caldwell Rd, Kent Co, MD.

PIPING PLOVERS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS were found at Chincoteague over the
weekend.

A MARBLED GODWIT was found May 21 at Swan Harbor Farm, Harford Co, MD.

RED KNOTS were reported from Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD on May 23.

A GULL-BILLED TERN was seen May 22 along the Wildlife Trail at Chincoteague
NWR, Accomack Co, VA.

A LEAST TERN* was seen May 18 at Violette's Lock and Riley's Lock along the
Potomac River in Montgomery Co, MD.

A BLACK TERN was sighted over the weekend at the causeway right before the
entrance to the Chincoteague NWR.

A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at the Equitation Field on May 22 was the highlight of
a visit to Rock Creek Park, NW DC.

One CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW was the only nightjar heard during a May 22 survey in
Southampton Co, VA. CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOWS were also heard from other locations
including at Chincoteague and in Prince George Co, VA.
A CHUCK-WILLS-WIDOW was calling May 18 at Weinberg Park, Pasadena, Anne
Arundel Co, MD.

An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen May 21 at Susquehanna SP, Harford Co, MD.
Another was seen May 21 at Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co. An OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER was also found at Chincoteague NWR over the weekend.

An ALDER FLYCATCHER was found May 19 on the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail in Bel
Air, Harford Co, MD. A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was the highlight of a
visit to Monticello Park, Alexandria, VA, on May 21. A YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER popped up May 23 at Aspen Hill Park, Rockville, MD.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was reported May 18 at the end of Candlewood Dr,
Jefferson Co, WV.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was the highlight of a walk at Rock Creek Park, NW DC
on May 18.

A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was found May 17 at Silver Lake Park, Prince William
Co, VA. One was also found May 19 at the Wilna Unit of the Rappahannock
River Valley NWR, Richmond Co, VA. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen twice May
21 at the Rock Creek Nature Center, Rock Creek Park, NW DC.

While warbler migration was definitely slowing down this past week, there
were still numerous reports of both migrants and residents throughout the
area. Warbler hot spots continued to include Rock Creek Park in NW DC and
Monticello Park in Alexandria, VA. Three GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS were found
May 22 along Old Legislative Rd, Allegany Co, MD. A SWAINSON'S WARBLER was
heard May 22 along Steel Bridge Rd, Rte 624, Greenville Co, VA. A MOURNING
WARBLER was seen May
18 at Youghiogheny Reservoir, Garrett Co, MD. A MOURNING WARBLER was seen
May 21 at the Maintenance Yard fence line, Rock Creek Park, NW DC.

HENSLOW'S and VESPER SPARROWS were found May 21 along Pea Ridge Rd, Garrett
Co, MD. HENSLOW'S SPARROWS were seen and heard May 22 along Old Legislative
Rd, Allegany Co, MD. A  LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen May
17 on the back side of Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA.

A SUMMER TANAGER was seen May 20 at the tip of Hains Point, SW DC.

Numerous DICKCISSELS were found on Greenfields Farm on May 17 in southern
Albemarle Co, VA at the intersection of Langhoner and James River Rds; do
not go on the farm beyond the turnaround. DICKCISSELS were reported on and
near Chino Farms, Chestertown, MD, on May 18 and 19. Two DICKCISSELS were
re-found May 20 singing from two hedgerows along Sassafras Caldwell Rd, Kent
Co, MD. A DICKCISSEL was singing May
21 along Rectortown Rd in northwestern Fauquier Co, VA. DICKCISSELS were
again seen and heard May 23 along Egypt Road, Dorchester Co, MD. 

RED CROSSBILLS visited a feeder from May 17 through May 19 at Union Springs,
Rockingham Co, VA.

West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
