Hi All,
Today I checked out the Potomac River's few mudflats that were exposed this morning at low tide. Unfortunately, in spite of lots of hard work, I saw no shorebirds at all. I wonder if shorebirds tend to get drawn up river by a certain amount of exposed sandbars/mudflats at both high and low tides. If not enough of this habitat exists, maybe few if any even try to fly up river?!? From what I understand, birders had many more shorebirds last year in DC (maybe lower river levels?)
In any case, I also birded the C&O canal between Georgetown and Chain Bridge. Lots of nesting activity (ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, BARN SWALLOW, BLUEBIRDS, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER), few migrants, but a nice singing PROTONOTARY WARBLER did put in a show west of Flecther's Boathouse.
Good Birding!
