On Sunday, May 22 and Monday May 23 we were on the Delaware Estuary shore to photograph northern migrating shorebirds where we already knew we could get close to them -along Port Mahon Rd. just south of Bombay Hook. We photographed mostly by driving along the shore on the rough waterside Port Mahon Road and (mostly) photographing from the vehicle. In great numbers were Ruddy Turnstones and Semipalmated Sandpipers. Also in lesser numbers were Semipalmated Plover, Dunlin, Eastern Willet, Least Sandpiper, and Short-billed Dowitcher all of which we obtained reasonable images of. As you would expect all were in breeding plumage. We did not see any Red Knots at Port Mahon Rd but they were in large numbers on the banks facing Mispillion Light. Too far away to photograph. The migration is still in progress and we heard that on Wednesday some Red Knots were among the countless Ruddy Turnstones and Sandpipers on Port Mahon Rd. Some of the photographs can be seen using the link below
