Hi all,
Birded Somerset Co. Saturday afternoon on the way back from North
Carolina. At Rumbly Point Road there was a pair of WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS along with a variety of more common shorebirds (including
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, DUNLIN, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, etc.). There were
also GLOSSY IBIS, lots of singing SEASIDE SPARROWS (at least 20), and a
few SALTMARSH SPARROWS.
At Deal Island WMA, there was a BLACK-NECKED STILT, which I later saw
sitting on a nest. Checking the second atlas, this is one location
where they have bred in the past. Good to see!
Sunday morning birded in the vicinity of Bear Swamp Road in Wicomico
County and found the expected breeding birds (e.g. WORM-EATING WARBLER,
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, SCARLET and SUMMER
TANAGERs, etc.). Was pleasantly surprised by the number of
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS. At virtually every stop, a pair popped out of
the leafs. At Twilley's Bridge Road near the airport, there was a
singing NORTHERN BOBWHITE and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS. Also had my first
SAM DYKE sighting.
Sunday afternoon briefly stopped by Skimmer Island, where the highlight
was the continuing RED KNOTS; I counted 23 in all.
Full reports submitted to eBird.
Good birding!
