I am in the midst of taking my Breeding Bird Surveys. Today I did
the C&O towpath from roughly Sycamore Landing Rd to Tenfoot Island. On the
return trip I checked the impoundments and it was a wader day- 2 Green
Herons, an immature LITTLE BLUE HERON, 2 Great Egrets (they are almost as
elusive as the MS Kite), 2 Yellow-crowned Night Herons (flyovers), and a
Least Bittern (heard). Also had 7 Great Blue Herons along the Potomac
River.
There was some discussion on the Carolina birdlist about the
scarcity of Wood Thrushes this spring. This surely wasn't the case today.
I recorded 21 which I think is a record for this route in the 13 years I
have been doing these surveys.
