I saw two Least Terns at Schoolhouse Pond today during my morning walk. The birds were foraging back and forth over the pond. I had been looking at the swallows over the rear of the pond when the terns appeared, and they proceeded to fly over the pond with rapid wingbeats for a minute or two as I watched. I saw one of the terns plunge dive. I then entered the woods and walked over to the other side of the pond where I would be closer to where the birds were feeding, but both terns had departed by the time I arrived at the other vantage point. I had missed Least Terns in Prince George's County in 2010, so I was glad for their appearance this morning. Incidentally, I have tried at Bladensburg Waterfront Park several times recently for Least Terns without success. There was not too much else unusual this morning, although there were two singing Orchard Orioles, several Common Yellowthroats, and an American Redstart.
