Rob Ostrowski and I birded eastern Allegany County today. Highest on the agenda was chasing the Red-headed Woodpecker reported by Danny Bystrak earlier this week. We found it easily based on the coordinates provided by Danny (on Orleans Oldtown Rd SE about 0.5 miles south of the intersection with Dug Hill Rd). We then proceeded to the southern end of Green Ridge. At the bend of Dailey Rd, we saw both Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers. We spent the rest of our time in Allegany along the C&O Canal. Along with expected species such as Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Warbling Vireo, we had 2 Cerulean Warblers about a 40 minute walk downstream from the Fifteen Mile Creek parking area near Little Orleans. At the end of the day, we also had a singing Cerulean Warbler on Sideling Hill in Washington County.
