Yesterday, June 17, Mike Welch and I went on a Dickcissel day in Queen
Anne's, Kent, Cecil, Caroline, Talbot, and Dorchester Counties. We were
successful in 5 out of the 6 counties, with much gratitude to recent
MDOsprey postings by Dan Haas, Danny Poet, Harry Armistead, and others I
apologize for omitting here.

Queen Anne's - 3 Dickcissels (2 males, 1 female). One singing almost at the
intersection with Rt. 213, the other two farther down the road in the field
to the east of the property for sale sign. Multiple Grasshopper Sparrows
were singing and flying about too.

Kent - Sassafras Caldwell Rd - at least 3 Dickcissels and at least 2
Grasshopper Sparrows, plus an Eastern Meadowlark, on the east side of the
road between the big power lines and a red barn on the west side of the
road.

Cecil - We dipped in this county. We drove several back roads east of Rt
213, but many of the fields were planted in corn or soybeans. Likely fields
were few and far between, and we heard no Dickcissels.

Caroline - Dickcissel on KnifeBox Rd, exactly a half mile east of the
intersection with Baker Rd. Grasshopper Sparrows also around.

Talbot - We spent about a half hour along the fence in Hole-in-the-Wall
Cemetery, but due to traffic noise and the size of the field, we couldn't
hear any nearby Dickcissels in mid afternoon. However, we returned there at
7 PM after going to Dorchester, and we heard one from Manadier Rd. just past
the cemetery. We parked along the side of the road where the first house is
on the left. The bird was in the large field adjacent to the cemetery,
along the northern edge of the field.

Dorchester - Very nicely vocal Dickcissel on the north side of Egypt Rd.,
soon after passing the school and other buildings after turning off Rt. 16.

If we'd had more time, we probably would have tried Calvert and St. Mary's
too!
