Screens - a hazard for hummers?

Early this AM - but not early enough - we found our male Ruby-throat had impaled 
its bill into the porch screen, perhps before he had a chance to feed, and had 
already died, probably from starvation. A hummer's bill is thin enough to be 
caught in this way, and I wonder if it is a common hazard. He was our only 
hummer this year; usually we have several pairs, with attendant females and 
eventually young. Did this lack of a normal life contribute to his careless 
behavior in some way?
