Last Saturday I was birding at Blackwater NWR and had the pleasure of
watching a red-headed woodpecker foraging for insects about 25 feet from the
road..  The bird was in the dead trees near the observation platform on the
left at you approach the sign for the endangered squirrels.  Then he flew to
the road in front of my car. On my second time around Wildlife Drive I
stopped at the same spot and he was flying from a pine tree, hunting for
insects and made at least a dozen circles showing all that white on his
belly and wings.  A wonderful sight!
