Elliott Island Road, Dorchester, US-MD
Jun 26, 2011 7:00 PM - 1:00 AM
Protocol: Traveling
13.0 mile(s)

Comments: Jay Sheppard, Dave Brenneman and I drove Elliott Island Road last
evening in search of Black Rail with no luck. From Henry's Cross Road to the
very end is about 13 miles. We concentrated in the saltmeadow cordgrass
(Spartina patens) areas. We talked to the owner at the end of Elliott Island.
The Ospreys have three young in the nest. He said they have been returning in
March for the past 10 years. Jay banded Black Rails here during his career. He
commented the habitat had changed dramatically over the past 40 years. We saw
one and heard Virginia Rail at most of our stops throughout the night. We heard
no Clapper Rail the entire night. As we left the marsh for the evening, we
listened for Chuck-wills-widows with no success either. There was no chorus of
hundreds of Green Tree Frogs in the pine islands in the middle of the marsh,
something Jay has always heard in past years at this time of the year.
