It was pointed out to me that DNR has shooting ranges on some of its lands. I should have mentioned this, to be more clear. Yes, there are numerous public ranges - but that is entirely different. At these specifically designated and regulated locations, you have to shoot at specified lanes and targets. You are not allowed to simply wander around wherever you please and target shoot. For more info - go to http://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/hunt_trap/shootingranges.asp

It is illegal to target shoot on any DNR lands or forests, EXCEPT within specifically limited areas at designated shooting ranges. There has been a repeated issue raised by recreational shooters, who would like MD DNR to increase access to lands for recreational shooting, and to provide expanded areas of public land in areas where it is already allowed, to increase the recreational shooting opportunties in MD. If you read the info on the DNR website, they are trying to accommodate this sector of the public in a reasonable way. But be aware - there will likely be a continued interest to expand these opportunities further in the future.
