This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, June 28, at 8 AM. 

Top birds this week are WHITE-FACED IBIS* in DE and WOOD STORK* in VA.

Other birds of interest include ducks, CORY'S SHEARWATER, WILSON'S
STORM-PETREL, MISSISSIPPI KITE, NORTHERN BOBWHITE, shorebirds, ICELAND GULL,
GLAUCOUS GULL, ROSEATE TERN, SANDWICH TERN, RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER, LEAST
FLYCATCHER, COMMON RAVEN, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and DICKCISSEL.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen in Raymond Pool, Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE on
Jun 24, 26, and 27.

A WOOD STORK was seen and video taped on a private farm in western Albemarle
Co, VA on Jun 21.

Small numbers of BLACK, WHITE-WINGED, and SURF SCOTERS were spotted from the
Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on June 27. A male RUDDY DUCK was in
McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC on Jun 27.

Six CORY'S SHEARWATERS were seen a few miles offshore from Ocean City on Jun
27. Although WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS are pelagic birds they occasionally come
close to shore. This week there were sightings from the ORV zone on north
Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on Jun 21; at the Ocean City Inlet on
Jun 27; on the southern end of Assateague Island, Accomack Co, VA on Jun 23;
on the south end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, Northampton Co, VA on
Jun 27, north of Mispillion Harbor, Kent Co, DE on Jun 23; and on the
Chesapeake Bay between Solomons, St. Mary's Co, MD and Smith Island on Jun
24.

The MISSISSIPPI KITE making sporadic visits to Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co,
MD was seen over the impoundments and nearby woods briefly in late afternoon
on Jun 25 and 26. An immature MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over the intersection of
Burke Lake Rd and Lake Braddock Dr in Burke, Fairfax Co, VA on Jun 24. A
first summer MISSISSIPPI KITE flew through Gunpowder Falls SP, Baltimore Co,
MD on Jun 26. A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen near La Plata, Charles Co, MD on
Jun 26.

NORTHERN BOBWHITE are now very uncommon on the western shore in MD.
One was heard calling on Melwood Rd, Prince Georges Co, MD on Jun 25 and 26.

In our region, June is not a month with large numbers of shorebirds.
However, the trip to Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD recorded 12 species on Jun
21. Two BLACK-NECKED STILTS continue to be seen at the Swan Creek dredge
containment facility, Anne Arundel Co, MD. An adult and two juvenile
WILSON'S PHALAROPES and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were found at Taylor's Gut
on Rt 9 near Smyrna, DE on Jun 24. There were 14 RED KNOTS at Mispillion
Harbor on Jun 23. Among the shorebirds on Skimmer Island in Ocean City, MD
on Jun 27 were 10 RED KNOTS and an
amazing 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.   

A first cycle ICELAND GULL was found on the beach near Swan Cove,
Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Jun 26. A second year GLAUCOUS GULL was
seen Jun 23 at Chincoteague NWR; it was on the Tom's Cove side of the beach
parking lot. An adult ROSEATE TERN was on Skimmer Island in Ocean City on
Jun 21 and 22. Four SANDWICH TERNS were spotted on Skimmer Island on Jun 23
and seven were there on Jun 27.

The RED-COCKADED WOODPECKERS at the Nature Conservancy's Piney Grove
Preserve in VA reached a thirty year high with 43 adult birds and 25
fledglings.

Three COMMON RAVENS were seen again at T Howard Duckett Dam on Rocky Gorge
Reservoir, Howard Co, MD on Jun 21.

Highly unusual in north Baltimore City on June 24 were a LEAST FLYCATCHER
and a CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER. 

DICKCISSELS continued to be seen and heard throughout the area this past
week. NW Carroll Co, MD was the hot spot. One birder had 14 singing birds in
the Keysville area at locations including Sharrett Rd, Sixes Bridge Rd,
Keysville Rd, Keysville-Bruceville Rd, Keysville-Frederick Rd, Keysville Rd
and Hagerstown Ln intersection, and Baumgardner Rd. In Frederick Co, MD,
DICKCISSELS were seen at Sixes Bridge and Forest Stream Roads, and Shriver
Rd. In Cecil Co, MD near the DE border there were birds at Wards Hill Rd and
Old Telegraph Rd. A DICKCISSEL was on the private Renditions Golf Course,
Davidsonville, Anne Arundel Co, MD. A pair of birds were found along
Mellwood Rd, Prince Georges Co, MD. A DICKCISSEL was along Turner Rd in
southern Calvert Co, MD. A bird was seen on Westerly Rd, south of
Poolesville, Montgomery Co, MD. Ten DICKCISSELS were found along Perkins
Hill Rd, Kent Co, MD. VA sightings include Homestead Rd and Peach Tree, in
Chesapeake, and Rappahannock River Valley NWR, Essex Co. DE sites included
Fowler Beach Rd, Sussex Co, and Rt 9 north of Bombay Hook NWR in Kent Co.
