Frances & I conducted the Breeding Bird Survey for Route 
22/Beltsville today (running through Laurel/PG County and 
Columbia/Howard County).  50 stops in 4 hrs 44 min, mostly 
overcast, zero to light winds, humid and warm.  Highlights 
included 2 nesting OSPREYS far from water (one brought in a 
fish!), 3 NORTHERN FLICKERS (Yellow-shafted) sharing one 
telephone pole, and a perched juvenile RED-SHOULDERED HAWK 
scratching off downy feathers while giving plaintive calls.
