Hi All,
Bobwhites use to be plentiful at Beltsville Agricultural Research Center
(BARC) according to people who have worked here longer than I. I have
not heard or seen any in the 12 years I have been here but recently four
of us working here have been hearing bobwhites in two locations. No
sightings yet.
So, here's the question(s): could our bobwhites actually be
mockingbirds? i.e. are they known to mimic bobwhites? If so, that
implies they have heard the real thing (or are they mimicking another
mimic?). Do we need to see the bobwhites to confirm their presence in
this area? If it is possible these are mockingbirds, how come they have
only started doing this this year?
Thanks for any insights!
Michel
