This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 5, at
about noon.

Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK* in VA,
WHITE-FACED IBIS* in DE and MD, and RUFF in DE.

Other birds of interest include CANVASBACK, LONG-TAILED DUCK, NORTHERN
BOBWHITE, MISSISSIPPI KITE, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, ICELAND GULL, SANDWICH
TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, WARBLING VIREO, WINTER WREN, VESPER
SPARROW, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL.

On 6/29, seven BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen near the
Virginia Gateway Shopping Center, Gainesville, VA (Prince William
County).

The WHITE-FACED IBIS continues in Raymond Pond at Bombay Hook NWR
(Kent Co DE), with sightings on 6/29 and 7/1. Another WHITE-FACED IBIS
was seen at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co MD on 7/4.

On 7/3, a REEVE (female RUFF) was spotted at Taylor's Gut, Kent Co DE.

A lone CANVASBACK was seen at Swan Creek Wetland, Anne Arundel Co MD,
on 7/1. Also on 7/1, at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co MD, a single
LONG-TAILED DUCK was spotted.

A NORTHERN BOBWHITE was heard (but not seen), on Mellwood Rd, Prince
George's Co MD, on 7/1.

The MISSISSIPPI KITE continues at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co MD,
with a sighting reported on 7/4. Two other MISSISSIPPI KITES were
spotted in MD, one at MD100 & Snowden River Pkwy, Columbia, Howard Co,
on 6/30, another at MD 4 & US301, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co,
on 7/3.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE turned up on 7/3 at Taylor's Gut.
An ICELAND GULL was seen far inland on 6/28, at Bridgewater, VA
(Rockingham Co). SANDWICH TERNS put in a brief appearance at Skimmer
Island, Ocean City MD (Worcester Co). Twelve were seen on 6/29, but
only one the next day.

During a Breeding Bird Survey route on 7/3, four BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS
were heard (but not seen) around Milford Neck, Kent Co DE.

WARBLING VIREOS are not rare in the area around DC, but the one seen
6/30 in the middle of Bethesda MD, on Pook's Hill, just off the
Capital Beltway, was a surprise. An apparent WINTER WREN has been
repeatedly heard singing in Loftridge Pk, Alexandria, VA, through the
first few days of July, but it has not been seen.

At MD313 & Nanticoke Rd (Dorchester Co), a VESPER SPARROW was observed
on 7/4. Although HENSLOW'S SPARROWS are not rare in far western MD,
farther east they are apparently less common. Nevertheless, one was
spotted along Old Legislative Rd, Frostburg, MD (Allegany Co) on 7/2.
DICKCISSELS are still being seen throughout the reporting area, in
many of the same places but apparently in smaller numbers than last
week

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey,
VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports
before midnight Monday, identify the county as well as state, and
include your name and a Tuesday morning contact, either e-mail or
phone.

Thank you for calling, and GOOD BIRDING.
