Thanks Paul,

Very interesting.  I wonder if DC Dept of Environment might look into this if the carcass is still around.  I wonder when the last river otter was recorded in rock creek.

A little slow posting this, but on Saturday (7/9) evening (6:00pm) I was
driving up Rock Creek Parkway and saw a roadkilled Otter.  Or at least
an animal that looked like an otter - I was unable to stop and examine
it.  It was big (about beaver-sized) but longer bodied and had a fairly
long, pointed tail that was pretty thick at the base.  And the legs
looked short.  I couldn't see the head.  I can't think of anything else
it might be - definitely not a muskrat (body was too big and tail was
too thick).  Did anyone else happen to see this?  I've never seen Otter
in DC, and am sorry that my first would be a dead one.

As I mentioned, this was along Rock Creek Parkway.  It was near the
south end, close to where Pennsylvania Ave. & M St. go over the parkway
and creek, and the creek runs right along the parkway.  I could easily
see an otter traveling up the creek from the Potomac and getting out and
then hit by a car.  Sigh.

Good birding,
