This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, July 12, at 10 AM.
Top birds this week are GREAT CORMORANT, MISSISSIPPI KITE, and RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE in MD.
Other birds of interest include COMMON LOON, WHITE IBIS, PEREGRINE FALCON,
shorebirds, BLACK TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, WINTER WREN, SEDGE WREN,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and DICKCISSEL.
A GREAT CORMORANT was spotted on Skimmer Island, Ocean City, MD (Worcester
Co) on July 5. In Charles Co MD, near DuBois Rd & MD6, a MISSISSIPPI KITE
was seen on July 5. Also on July 5, a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen on
Poplar Island, Talbot Co MD.
A young COMMON LOON was seen on the Potomac River (MD, Montgomery Co)
between Conn Island and the VA shore. (This location can only be viewed from
the VA side of the river.) On July 6, eight WHITE IBIS were seen at
Presquille NWR, Chesterfield Co VA. A single WHITE IBIS was spotted on July
11 at Huntley Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co VA.
In NW DC, a PEREGRINE FALCON has been seen on the Roosevelt Bridge over the
Potomac River, on July 5 and several days prior to that.
A number of shorebirds have been seen that are either out-of-season or very
early, or in unusual numbers. On July 5, 36 BLACK-NECKED STILTS were found
on Poplar Island, Talbot Co MD. AMERICAN AVOCETS were seen at several places
in MD: one on Poplar Island on July 5, one at Swan Creek Wetland (North
Dredge cell), Anne Arundel Co, on July 7, and three on July 10 at Jug Bay,
along the Anne Arundel/Prince George's Co border. Three RUDDY TURNSTONES,
two RED KNOTS, and a DUNLIN were found at Poplar Island on July 5.
A BLACK TERN was seen among many other terns at Skimmer Island on July 5.
In Melwood Pk, Anne Arundel Co MD, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard singing
on July 9, but it wasn't seen. Another heard-only bird was the WINTER WREN
in Loftridge Pk, Alexandria, VA, which has been singing for at least a week,
but never seen. In Augusta Co VA, near VA 605 (Mt. Horeb Rd) and VA 608, at
least two SEDGE WRENS were heard, then seen, on July 10.
On July 7, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW at Swan Creek Wetland and a DARK-EYED
JUNCO at Patuxent NWR (North Tract, Anne Arundel Co MD) were probably
wishing they had flown north with their comrades. DICKCISSELS are still
being seen throughout the reporting area, but in rapidly decreasing numbers.
Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
